Acne treatment in Pleasanton

In short

Acne is really two problems. There is what is happening now — congestion, breakouts, inflammation — and there is what it leaves behind.

What it leaves behind is three different things, and they are routinely confused with one another. Red marks are blood vessels. Brown marks are pigment. Scars are texture. Only the third is permanent, and all three need something different.

The order matters: the acne is settled first, then what it left behind is treated. Resurfacing inflamed skin tends to leave more marking than it clears.

Red mark, brown mark, or scar?

This is the question that decides everything else, and it is worth settling before any treatment is booked. Look at the area in side lighting rather than straight on, and in daylight rather than bathroom light.

Red or purple marks

Flat, pink to purple, and most obvious after a hot shower or a workout. These are not scars at all. The clinical name is post-inflammatory erythema: dilated capillaries left over from the inflammation, with the skin surface perfectly smooth. They fade on their own, usually over three to six months.

Because they are vascular, they respond to light that targets haemoglobin — IPL clears them considerably faster than waiting does. Peels and microneedling do very little for them, which is why people who are treated for the wrong thing end up frustrated.

Brown marks

Flat, tan to deep brown, and more common and more persistent in deeper skin tones. This is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — melanin deposited in response to the inflammation. The skin is smooth; the colour is the only problem. Left alone these can take a year or more.

They respond to chemical peels and to pigment-specific lasers such as PicoSure. Sun exposure undoes the work faster than any treatment replaces it, so daily sunscreen is doing more here than the appointments are.

True scars

Depth rather than colour. A scar casts a small shadow in side lighting, and running a finger over it tells you more than looking does. These do not fade, because tissue has actually been lost or distorted. Colour may normalise over time while the texture stays exactly as it is, which is why some people think their scarring got better and then stalled.

Texture is treated by remodelling the dermis — Potenza RF microneedling, microneedling, or a resurfacing laser, depending on the scar.

Red is a vessel. Brown is pigment. A shadow is a scar. Three problems, three answers.

Settling it down first

While acne is active, the useful work is unclogging and calming rather than resurfacing. Thorough extraction clears the congestion that keeps feeding it, salicylic and other appropriately chosen peels work on the follicle, and LED light therapy helps settle inflammation between visits. HydraFacial does the extraction and exfoliation part in one appointment and is comfortable enough to repeat regularly.

Inflamed, cystic lesions are the exception. Extraction on those spreads the inflammation and usually costs you a mark that was not going to be there otherwise.

What we use, and for which problem

TreatmentWhat it doesFor
HydraFacial MD Cleanses, exfoliates and extracts in one pass, with no downtime. Congestion, blackheads, oily skin
Chemical peels Controlled exfoliation at a chosen depth; works on the follicle and on pigment. Active acne · Brown marks
LED light therapy Calms inflammation. Usually added to another treatment rather than booked alone. Inflamed, angry skin
IPL photofacial Targets haemoglobin, so it clears the vascular component rather than the surface. Red and purple marks
PicoSure Breaks up pigment with very short pulses rather than heat. Brown marks
Potenza Radiofrequency through microneedles, remodelling the dermis at a chosen depth. Textural scarring · Pores
Microneedling Mechanical remodelling of the dermis, gentler and with less recovery than Potenza. Shallow rolling scars
BB fractional laser Resurfaces in columns, reaching deeper than needling at the cost of more recovery. Deeper, defined scars

Scars behave differently depending on their shape

Not all textural scarring responds equally, and the shape predicts the result more reliably than the number of sessions does.

Most faces have a mixture, which is why a plan usually combines something that works broadly with something aimed at the few scars that are doing most of the damage.

When this belongs with a dermatologist

Deep cystic or nodular acne, acne that is scarring as it goes, and acne that has not responded to a reasonable topical routine are medical problems before they are aesthetic ones. They are managed with prescription treatment, and the resurfacing work comes afterwards. If that is the picture, a dermatology referral is the right first step, and the consultation here will say so.

Common questions

How do I know if it is a scar or a mark?

Look at it in side lighting rather than straight on. A mark is flat — the skin is smooth and only the colour is wrong. A scar has depth, so it casts a small shadow when the light comes from the side. Time is the other test: marks fade over months, scars do not change.

Will post-acne marks fade on their own?

Usually, but slowly. Red marks commonly settle over three to six months and brown marks can take a year or longer, particularly in deeper skin tones. Treatment does not do anything the skin would not eventually do by itself; it shortens the wait considerably. Daily sunscreen does more than any single appointment for the brown ones.

How long after a breakout can I have a peel or microneedling?

The area needs to be calm first. Resurfacing inflamed skin tends to spread the inflammation and can leave more marking than it clears. In practice that means settling the acne over several weeks and then starting on what it left behind, which is also the order that gives the clearest read on how much scarring is really there.

Can a facial help acne?

For congestion, blackheads and the kind of skin that keeps clogging, yes — proper extraction and exfoliation make a visible difference and HydraFacial does both in one visit. For inflamed, cystic acne a facial is not the answer and extraction on inflamed lesions makes it worse.

How many sessions do acne scars need?

Textural scarring is usually a course of three to six sessions spaced about a month apart, and the result keeps building for several months after the last one. A realistic goal is substantial improvement rather than erasure — scars soften and shallow out, and the skin stops catching the light the way it did.

Can I be seen for acne in Sunnyvale?

Yes. Both locations run the same consultation and the same clinical team. Not every device is in both rooms, so if a specific treatment is planned it is worth asking which site it runs at.
