In short
PicoSure delivers its energy in picoseconds, which is short enough to shatter pigment mechanically rather than mainly by heating it. Less heat in the surrounding skin is what makes it a reasonable choice on deeper skin tones.
We use it for sun damage, freckling and uneven tone, and for tattoo removal. Both are a series rather than a single appointment.
Pigment and sun damage
Treated spots usually darken before they clear, which is the pigment coming to the surface. That stage lasts several days and is the part worth knowing about before you book around an event.
Melasma is treated differently and more cautiously. It is a chronic condition rather than a deposit, and treating it like sun damage tends to make it worse.
Tattoo removal
Clearance depends on ink colour, depth, density and how long the tattoo has been there. Black responds most predictably; some greens and light blues are stubborn regardless of the device.
Sessions are spaced several weeks apart to let the body clear what has been broken up. How many it takes is an estimate at consultation rather than a promise.
When we would choose something else
If the concern is texture rather than colour, a resurfacing treatment or microneedling is the better fit.
If the pigment is melasma, we would discuss a gentler, longer-term plan before using any device.
Recent sun exposure and some photosensitising medications are reasons to postpone.
Common questions
How many sessions does tattoo removal take?
It depends on ink colour, density, depth and age. Black clears most predictably. We give an estimate after seeing the tattoo rather than a number in advance.
Will the treated spots get darker?
Usually yes, for several days, as the pigment works its way to the surface. That darkening is expected and then clears.
Is PicoSure safe for darker skin?
Its very short pulses deposit less heat into surrounding skin than longer-pulsed lasers, which matters in melanin-rich skin. Settings are still chosen for your skin rather than a default.
