Threads reposition tissue rather than add to it. Absorbable polydioxanone is placed under the skin, tissue is lifted along it, and collagen forms along the thread path as it dissolves.
The lift is modest and the honest comparison is not a facelift. Threads suit early descent in someone whose skin still has reasonable quality, and they are often used alongside a volume or tightening treatment rather than instead of one.
What threads actually do
Two things at once. The barbs or cones engage tissue and hold it in a slightly different position, and the material itself provokes a collagen response along its path over the months that follow.
The immediate lift settles within the first weeks as swelling resolves, so the result at six weeks is the honest one, not the result in the mirror on the day.
When we recommend it
- Early jawline softening where the skin still has thickness
- A midface that has dropped slightly rather than deflated
- Brow asymmetry, where a small change reads clearly
- Someone who wants repositioning without surgery and understands the scale of it
When we would choose something else
Significant, established sagging is a surgical concern. Threads placed into heavy tissue pull against gravity they cannot win, and the result is short-lived.
If the face has lost volume rather than position, lifting the remaining tissue tends to look drawn. Volume first, then reassess.
Very thin skin can show thread lines, which is a reason we would advise against it.
Common questions
How long do PDO threads last?
The threads themselves absorb over several months. The repositioning effect typically lasts around a year, and the collagen laid down along the thread path persists beyond that.
Is a thread lift the same as a facelift?
No. A facelift removes and redrapes tissue surgically. Threads reposition existing tissue by a modest amount without removing anything, and the scale of change is much smaller.
What is recovery like?
Expect tightness, some swelling and occasional puckering for several days. Most people are presentable within a few days and fully settled by about six weeks.
