I look hollow, but I do not want to look filled.
The short answer
The overfilled look usually comes from treating a hollow as a space to fill rather than a structure that has lost support. Adding volume where the light falls wrong is what reads as done.
Hyaluronic acid fillers add volume immediately and can be dissolved, which makes them forgiving and well suited to defined areas. Biostimulators like Sculptra work differently. They prompt your own collagen over months, so the change is gradual and broader. Neither is automatically the right answer; it depends on what is actually missing.
Why faces look hollow
Volume loss is rarely just fat. Facial fat sits in separate compartments that deflate at different rates, the ligaments holding them loosen, and the bone underneath remodels with age: the eye sockets widen, the midface loses projection, the jaw changes angle.
So a temple that looks empty may be losing bone support rather than fat, and a nasolabial fold that has deepened is often a midface problem rather than a fold problem. Filling the fold directly is one of the most common ways to make a face look heavier rather than younger.
How the two categories differ
| HA fillers | Biostimulators | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Adds volume directly | Stimulates your own collagen over time |
| When you see it | Immediately | Gradually, over months |
| Reversible | Yes, can be dissolved | No |
| Usually chosen for | Defined areas, lips, precise shaping | Broader restoration across a region |
| Sessions | Often one | Usually a short series |
How we decide
- If the area is small and defined (lips, a tear trough, a chin), HA gives control and can be reversed if it is not right.
- If a whole region has deflated, a biostimulator often looks more natural, because the change arrives slowly and reads as your own face rather than as product.
- If you are anxious about looking done, the gradual option is usually the kinder one. Nobody can point to the week it happened.
- If the issue is descent rather than deflation, neither is the answer, and adding volume will make it worse. That is where tightening or surgery comes in.
Most overfilled faces were not treated with too much product. They were treated in the wrong place.
When to leave it alone
Some hollowing is better left alone. A degree of shadow is part of an adult face, and chasing it flat is what produces the look you are trying to avoid. And if what is bothering you is skin quality rather than volume, more filler will not fix it.
